Following the recent meningitis B outbreak in the UK, including cases affecting young people, it’s a timely reminder to consider protection. Recent reports show multiple cases and deaths linked to an outbreak in Kent, with vaccination being used to help control the spread.

What is Meningitis B?

Meningitis B is a serious bacterial infection that can lead to meningitis and sepsis. It can become life-threatening very quickly, especially in young people.

Vaccine Safety – Key Facts

Based on trusted information from University of Oxford Vaccine Knowledge:

• The MenB vaccine used in the UK (Bexsero) has been extensively tested for safety
• Like all vaccines, side effects can occur, but most are mild and short-lived 
• Common side effects include:
– soreness or swelling at the injection site
– headache, fatigue, or mild fever 
• Serious allergic reactions are extremely rare (around 1 in 900,000 doses) 
• Side effects are a sign the immune system is building protection against the disease

• Travellers
• Anyone not vaccinated as a child

What are the costs?

This is a private service and the cost of vaccine (Bexsero) is £115 per dose and its a two dose course.
